The Poudre Landmarks Foundation Welcomes You to Explore the Diverse History of Early Fort Collins Through Our Three Historic Properties.
Incorporated in 1972, the mission of the Poudre Landmarks Foundation, Inc. is to preserve, restore, protect and interpret the architectural and cultural heritage of the Fort Collins area. Built in 1879, The Avery House represents the gains made by those "founding fathers" of Fort Collins who committed themselves to the economic development of the town of Fort Collins. Serving as a military post between 1862 and 1866, Fort Collins was established to protect the Cherokee Trail and guard the Overland Stage line. In 1873, Fort Collins was incorporated as a town. The Avery House may also be reserved for weddings, receptions and meetings. Click here for scheduling information. Click here for the Avery House Video (7 minutes).
In addition to ensuring an adequate supply of water for fighting the frequent fires that plagued the early township, the 1882.83 Historic Water Works provided the growing town of Fort Collins with drinking water. The 26 acre Water Works site also features evidence of a portion of the Cherokee Trail, and is an important landmark for conveying the story of this famous route, which led gold seekers, emigrants, and outlaws through the Western Frontier.
The John and Inez Romero House Museum, constructed by hand of adobe bricks in 1927, marks the immigration and active recruitment of Hispanic laborers seeking employment in the sugar beet industry boom that began at the turn of the twentieth century. The John and Inez Romero House, which will formally be known as The Museo de las Tres Colonias, conveys the stories of hardship, perseverance and success experienced by Hispanic immigrants to the Fort Collins area. The Foundation manages the Avery House Historic District, the 1882-83 Fort Collins Water Works and the Museo de las Tres Colonias (The John and Inez Romero House) and provides educational programs about life in early Fort Collins through tours, displays and special events. |
